May 24 to July 13, 2014
Opening Reception: Saturday, May 24, 2014. 2pm – 4pm
In the Minarovich Gallery – Elora Centre for the Arts
As a building moves, creaks and groans, its sounds are transformed into a score continuously played by a grand piano. The Elora Piano, a sound installation by David Jensenius, lets all those who wander into the Elora Centre for the Arts experience the building’s own composition.
During his residency at ECFTA Jensenius explored the building (formerly the Elora Public School) and the various groups, organizations, artists, children and adults that occupy the physical, intellectual and energetic space of Elora Centre for the Arts. His residency set the stage for Jensenius’ exhibition, wherein the artist will wire the building for activity and sound which in turn will be transformed and played through instruments stationed in the gallery as an ongoing, reactionary, musical composition. A recording and/or live stream of the sound will also be made available through our website.
David is blogging on his experiences while in Elora. Connect with The Elora Piano on Tumbler and Twitter.
We are pleased to present this exhibition in connection with the Open Ears Festival of Music and Sound, June 5 to 15, 2014 www.openears.ca

THANK YOU!
As co-chairs of the Artcetera 2014 organizing committee and on behalf of the Board of Directors of the Elora Centre for the Arts, we want to thank you for your attendance, participation and support of the 5th annual Artcetera fundraising event which took place on May 10th. Our new format of an ‘art elimination draw’ proved to be an entertaining activity and the evening, in addition to being fun and exciting, raised over $22,000!
As always we were overwhelmed by the community support of this event – from the 78 artists whose beautifully creative works were donated and the local businesses that contributed to our Silent Auction, to the generous corporate sponsorship that the event attracted and the tremendous volunteer and staff effort that went into planning and executing our annual fundraiser.
Artcetera 2014 not only raised much-needed funds for the Centre, but allowed us to promote our local and regional artists. Net proceeds from the event will assist the Elora Centre for the Arts in maintaining its position as the artistic focal point of the community. Thank you all for your support. We hope to see you soon at many other events at the Centre throughout the year.

2011 Shirley Dilworth Jaychuk Painting Competition Winner
April 10 – May 3, 2014
Opening Reception: April 10, 7pm – 9:30pm
This competition honours the life and artistic passion of Shirley Dilworth Jaychuk. Juried representational and impressionist paintings that capture the town and character of Elora, Fergus and rural environs of Centre Wellington will be exhibited. Awards will be announced at the opening reception on April 10.
Shirley Dilworth Jaychuk had a lifetime love of art, she was especially fond of the Group of Seven, specifically A.Y. Jackson, A.J. Casson and J.E.H MacDonald. She also enjoyed the French impressionists and Van Gogh. Upon her passing in 2006, her husband Stan wanted to do something to keep Shirley’s love of art alive and so the Shirley Dilworth Jaychuk Painting Competition was created. “Shirley would have supported this,” said Stan, “This is something to commemorate her love of the arts. The fact that the competition is for representational painting would make her very happy.”

Mediated Landscapes, in the Minarovich Gallery – Elora Centre for the Arts
March 8 – April 5, 2014
Opening Reception: Saturday, March 8, 2pm – 4pm
Artist Round Table Discussion: Sunday, March 30, 2014. 2pm – 4pm
Curated by Phil Irish
Exploring notions of the land within their own right, each of these artists uses materiality and the creative process to mediate the conventions of the landscape.
Colin Carney employs digital photography, video and manual printmaking in order to explore the urban landscape. Linda Risacher-Copp breaks down the landscape into a series of indirect steps through a wax resist process. Barry McCarthy layers saturated colours to create illusionistic spaces working within the traditions of watercolour and oil painting. Alex McLeod sets up the illusion through digital prints creating sensuous, imagined and surreal worlds.
About the Artists
Colin Carney is currently based out of Guelph, Ontario. He received his MFA from the University of Waterloo and his Honours BA (Fine Art) from the University of Guelph. He has shown widely with recent exhibitions at Red Head Gallery, Forest City Gallery, Gallery TPW and Arta Gallery. www.colincarney.com
Linda Copp was educated in Washington, D.C. where she studied with the American abstractionist Kenneth Noland. Moving to Canada in the 1960s her practice focused on hard-edge acrylic abstraction. After an introduction to batik, Copp developed a unique approach to the medium. Batik continues to influence Copp’s practice currently based in Elora, Ontario. www.lrcopp.com
Barry McCarthy is based out of Elora, Ontario. His practice focus on the roots of traditional, representational watercolour and oil landscapes. The interests of Beal’s process and practice are concerned with the ‘Amateur’ and ‘Professional’, feigned behaviors and acting and comedy. His work undertakes these dramatic and sometimes tragic themes in a highly playful, but subtle fashion leaving space for an open-ended dialogue with the viewer. Investigations into this subject matter survey a variety of media with a primary focus on drawing and sculpture/installation. Currently he is expanding his practice to incorporate new media.
About the Artist
Kyle Beal graduated from ACAD in 2001 and holds a Masters degree in visual art from the University of Victoria (2004). His work has been featured in exhibitions throughout Canada, including the Glenbow Museum in Alberta and the Contemporary Art Gallery of Vancouver. His multidisciplinary practice uses tradition media along with interactive electronic objects to explore ideas related to language, comedy, and the space between authentic and affected behavior. Recent exhibitions include a solo exhibition at ARTsPLACE (Annapolis Royal Nova Scotia) and a solo exhibition at NO Foundation (Toronto). Forthcoming exhibition include a three-person show centered around comedy and tragedy at AKA (Saskatoon SK) Curated by Dagmara Genda, an Arts Society Satellite Gallery (Calgary, AB) and a solo exhibition at Elora Centre for the Arts (Elora, ON). www.kylebeal.blogspot.ca

Neither be cynical about love; for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment it is as perennial as the grass.
– Desiderata, Max Ehrmann, 1927
Curated by Katherine Dennis
Simple gestures – writing a love letter or anonymous note, embracing someone tenderly, or watering a plant – are poetic affirmations for ways of interacting in and connecting with the world. As Perennial as the Grass shares visual segments from stories about love in the form of textile, video and installation art. The artists of this exhibition, Amalie Atkins, Brian Cauley, Kathryn Ruppert-Dazai and Ellyn Walker, manifest intimate insights into their mindset with actions and images that resist cynical, aloof attitudes too commonly cultivated in contemporary society. These candid artworks demonstrate genuine affection for the self and other.
During the two months leading up to the exhibition (16 August–13 October), Cauley’s Neighbourhood Messages (2012) invites the Elora community to leave inspirational notes that carry their goodwill to strangers. Located in Bissell Park, a typewriter awaits participants who want to adorn the overhanging tree branches with their messages. As the collection of notes grows visitors are invited to read, respond, reflect on or remove the traces left behind by others. An assemblage of notes chosen by the artist will later hang in the gallery as a record of these anonymous exchanges.
In the gallery, the artworks expose relationships among family and strangers, between paramours, and within one’s self. Filmed in Saskatchewan, Atkins’s video Embrace (2011) captures a precious moment of sisterly affection between two elderly Canadian-Austrian twins set against the backdrop of the prairie skies. This cinematic display of a simple, gentle gesture between family members reveals the monumental consequence of life’s otherwise small and quiet moments.
Sharing personal and eccentric insights into their relationship Ruppert-Dazai’s crocheted fragments from messages written by her husband onto large-scale knit canvases in her Love Letter Series, (2008–12). The quirky phrases speak of honesty and openness, not just between the couple but also in their willingness to expose this relationship publicly. The strangeness and significance of vulnerability continues in Ruppert-Dazai’s Twin White, I love you, La Crainte de la morte et d’autres crainte(2005), which portrays the anxiety and excitement of the first time you are naked in front of a loved one.
In Walker’s #7: Love a garden with all your heart (2013), the simplicity of caring for a garden offers a deeply somber yet pragmatic optimism about the journey to mental health. Visitors to the gallery are encouraged to water the artist’s garden in her absence, helping her care for the plants entrusted to the exhibition. Together these artists explore the intricacies of love, transforming the deeply personal into eclectic and relatable perspectives on this complex and multifaceted emotion.
