    Tapestry weaving is a medium of artistic expression that is both ancient and modern. It is a way of ‘painting’ with yarn that uses texture, colour and line as part of the process. It is a slow meditative practice that can be described as a form of moving meditation. Join Dianne Kennedy Cruttenden for a day of fun with fibre in this free-spirited weaving workshop. This class is for new weavers and for those who have the basics and wish to explore new techniques. Dianne brings her wealth of knowledge and spirit of adventure to this 51/2 hour class. We will explore the art of tapestry weaving through a variety of techniques such as; plain weave, rya knots, soumak, eccentric weave and irregular hatching, whilst playing with form, colour and texture. Participants will go home with a finished tapestry ready to hang. This is a great way to begin your weaving adventure without the cost of an expensive loom!

    You are invited to the gallery to meet artist Maryam Ebrahimi and hear first-hand about her exhibition, 'Fly Me Away'. Refreshments will be served.  Admission is free.  No registration required! Most popularly known for her ability to capture the illusion of flow on an otherwise static canvas, Maryam Ebrahimi, a Canadian-Iranian artist, is an exquisite professionally trained artist living in Richmond Hill, Ontario.  Her pieces have been showcased both nationally and abroad.  Over the years, Maryam developed an artistic style that is uniquely her own. Her use of a limited colour pallet, combined with heavy layers and seamless brush strokes, results in artwork that is full of depth and personality, and tells a vivid story that is full of emotion.

    Clay hanging on the wall? Yes!! Let's look at the ceramics from a different angle! In this limited-space workshop, artist INGA GIRCYTE will guide you in the creation of a unique abstracted, sculptural wall piece made from clay, mimicking a domestic object. Inga will lead you through this 2 evening bi-weekly process to achieve ready-to-hang, MOMA-worthy results!  Will it be an exact look alike of the primary object or an abstract take! It’s up to you! In this workshop you will learn:
    • the basic techniques of hand building
    • basic techniques of glazing and colour mixing
    We will provide a number of objects from daily life from which to choose. Or if you have a favourite or sentimental object at home; your grandmothers’ egg beater, a well-worn tool from your father’s workbench, a vintage high heel or clutch; a retro game controller; an old-timey toaster or espresso percolator; your dad’s stuffed prized trout; your lucky push up bra? Bring it with you and turn it into an art piece with a deeper personal meaning. The weirder or more wonderful the better! Maximum size approx. 12”x12”.     A BIRD IN THE HAND  Drawing & Mixed Media workshop with DAVID CAESAR Sunday, May 7  |  11am – 5pm MAX. 10  |  Ages 16+ $125 plus HST Please bring your own materials. *please note there is a minimum of 6 required to run this class. A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush, but a bird on paper?  Priceless! Join artist David Caesar for this drawing media workshop celebrating our avian friends! David teaches a classical approach which incorporates high realism, with a focus on skill building. He works in the way of the old masters using keen observation and focused critique. His own work is highly detailed and masterful and his class environment encourages students to challenge themselves! In this exciting and comprehensive workshop, we will review basic bird anatomy and move on to creating a composition for the basis of a wildlife painting or drawing.  Working from either photos provided by the instructor or photos that students bring in themselves, we will discuss basic drawing techniques as well as rendering our main subject as well as any background or foreground elements we choose to include. Any medium is welcome. Pencil, pastel, watercolour, acrylic, etc. All wet or dry media accepted. Come prepared! ALL LEVELS WELCOME! Suitable for Beginner and Intermediate students.

    Elora Plein Air Festival Art Show & Sale in the gallery at the Elora Centre for the Arts

    This is a wonderful weekend to visit and explore the Elora and Fergus area!  Artists will be set up throughout the area to capture the charming heritage buildings, historic neighbourhoods, the dramatic river or gorge vistas, rolling hillsides and picturesque farms of our uniquely beautiful region throughout the weekend. The grand finale show and sale will be Sunday May 21 from 12 PM-5PM in the gallery at the Elora Centre for the Arts.  Everyone is welcome to view the collective works from the weekend event.  All pieces are available for sale.

    All materials included in $25 kit fee payable to the instructor at the start of class. Join Dianne Kennedy Cruttenden for a day of fun with fibre in this free-spirited weaving workshop. Dianne brings her wealth of knowledge and spirit of adventure to this 5-1/2 hour class and you will go home with a finished tapestry ready to hang! Tapestry weaving is a medium of artistic expression that is both ancient and modern. It’s a way of ‘painting’ with yarn that uses texture, colour and line as part of the process. This workshop is designed for those both with experience, and those who are new to Tapestry Weaving. We will explore the art of tapestry weaving through a variety of techniques such as; plain weave, rya knots, soumak, eccentric weave and irregular hatching, whilst playing with form, colour and texture. Dianne will also bring a variety of looms and demonstrate how to warp up the various looms, including a pipe loom and a rigid heddle loom. Students can then take turns trying them out. This is a great way to begin your weaving adventure without the cost of an expensive loom! For those who have some experience we will refresh and build upon the skills you have and for those who are new, well get ready to have fun and learn an exciting and beautiful way of expressing your creativity. Dianne welcomes those who have taken a previous workshop with her, as well as all beginners!

    A Fox or A Hare? What a fine pair! Learn the art of needle felting a FOX or HARE portrait. Your choice! Join fibre artist, Megan Cleland in a guided workshop to needle-felt your way to create your own woolly portrait of either a fox or a hare. Megan will talk about different transfer techniques, options for backgrounds, colour theory and the basics of dry felting with wool. The finished piece will be framed in a 10” embroidery hoop. A great way to learn a new skill that you can continue to develop and experiment with on your own. Suitable for any level of experience! $20 kit fee is payable in cash to the instructor at the start of class.
