Join Dianne Kennedy Cruttenden for a day of fun with fibre in this free-spirited weaving workshop. Dianne brings her wealth of knowledge and spirit of adventure to this 5-1/2 hour class and you will go home with a finished tapestry ready to hang!

Tapestry weaving is a medium of artistic expression that is both ancient and modern. It’s a way of ‘painting’ with yarn that uses texture, colour and line as part of the process. This workshop is designed for those both with experience, and those who are new to Tapestry Weaving.

We will explore the art of tapestry weaving through a variety of techniques such as; plain weave, rya knots, soumak, eccentric weave and irregular hatching, whilst playing with form, colour and texture.

Dianne will also bring a variety of looms and demonstrate how to warp up the various looms, including a pipe loom and a rigid heddle loom. Students can then take turns trying them out. This is a great way to begin your weaving adventure without the cost of an expensive loom!

For those who have some experience we will refresh and build upon the skills you have and for those who are new, well get ready to have fun and learn an exciting and beautiful way of expressing your creativity. Dianne welcomes those who have taken a previous workshop with her, as well as all beginners!

Please note there is a $25 kit fee payable in cash to Dianne at the start of class.

Your kit will include a mix of beautiful yarns, including some of Dianne’s hand spun and hand dyed wool and silk, a painted canvas that serves as the loom and frames your finished piece, tapestry needles and handouts.

About the artist:

Dianne Kennedy Cruttenden has been creating woven tapestries and clothing since 1970.  She has honed her skills over the decades, often carding, dying and spinning her own yarn.  Dianne uses only the highest quality materials in her creations.  Her hand-dyed yarn achieves a level of vibrancy and saturation that speaks for itself.

After spending the last decade working out of her studio “Sheepish Grin” on Manitoulin Island, Dianne and her husband recently relocated to the charming small town of Fergus, Ontario.  Dianne continues to create wonderful Art to Wear as well as unique tapestries to embellish the home and add vibrancy to any space.

Dianne first studied weaving at Sheridan School of Design in Toronto and apprenticed to Master weaver Robert L. Kidd in Michigan during the 1970s.  In February of 2015 Dianne completed an internship with world-renowned tapestry artist Maximo Laura.  She has taught her weaving skills over the years throughout North America from the Canadian Arctic to the United States.

Dianne’s work has been shown and collected throughout North America at such venues as: The Detroit Institute of Arts, Nuit Blanche 2013 in Ottawa, the Gore Bay Museum in Gore Bay, Ontario, the Textile Museum of Canada, and for many years at her own galleries, The Brick Room Gallery in St. Catharines and The Queen Street Gallery in Niagara-on-the-Lake.
