Photographs can be valuable reference tools, but great paintings require more than simply reproducing what the camera sees. Designed for intermediate painters, Artist Rick Worthington will guide artists on how to transform photographic reference into stronger, more expressive works of art.

Through demonstrations, discussion, and guided painting exercises, learn how to simplify complex scenes, create more effective compositions, strengthen colour and value relationships, and make thoughtful artistic choices that enhance the impact of their paintings. Emphasis will be placed on editing, interpreting, and redesigning photographic material rather than copying it literally.

You will leave with practical strategies for using reference photos as a starting point while developing the confidence to make creative decisions that bring greater originality, mood, and visual interest to their work. By the end of the workshop, students will have a deeper understanding of how to translate photographs into compelling paintings that reflect their own artistic vision.
