New exhibit reflects beauty and scale of rivers Elora, ON – The Elora Centre for the Arts is featuring an exhibit by its first Artist in Residence Sebastien Worsnip. Based in Montreal, Worsnip became the first Artist in Residence for the Elora Centre for the Arts this spring. He chose Elora when he was drawn to the rivers that carve their way through ancient limestone of the Elora Gorge. The sketches and intimations that he collected have, in his Montreal studio, become layered and evocative abstractions. Worsnip describes his creative process taking shape: “I try to mix these varying points of view by exploding the collected details from my original site sketches in order to explore their possibilities.” The specific imagery of his paintings shift scale before your eyes. Sometimes they feel like vast spaces of the cosmos, other times they place you within microscopic cellular structures. Wornsip notes that “the world is in fact quite abstract; it is only at a human scale that we depict our environment with fixed representations.” The imagery of a River shifting, eroding, and transforming itself through the millennia provides the ideal muse for these paintings. Embracing flux and transformation, for the landscape and the paintings alike, results in new discoveries. The exhibition runs from November 19 to January 3, 2010 in the Minarovich Gallery. Please join the artist at the opening reception, Thursday November 19, at 7:30 p.m. at the Elora Centre for the Arts.
