Eva McCauley: Solas agus Scath
March 26 – April 26, 2009: opening reception Thursday March 26, 7:30 pm.
The exhibition’s title (pronounced “Solas aguss Scah”) means “Light and Shadow” in Irish Gaelic. Work for the exhibition draws upon McCauley’s experience at the Cill Rialaig artist’s residency, County Kerry, on Ireland’s rugged southwestern coastline. In the isolated village, McCauley experienced the dislocation of being in a foreign place, coupled with an intensity of memory.
McCauley’s work includes paintings and monotypes. The images explore the illusory and often deceptive qualities of memory in relation to the experience of visiting a foreign place — fabrications culled from the irregular flow of images from personal memory, history, imagination, as well as digital photographs taken during her stay. In the process of creation, mysterious areas of shadow and sweeping luminous sky evoke hints of stories at the edges of remembrance.
