SUMMARY:COMMUNITY CONNECTIONS - Youth Outreach. Connecting to Schools Through Art for elementary & high school students
DESCRIPTION:COMMUNITY CONNECTIONS provides free arts programming to youth with intellectual and/or developmental delays in elementary and secondary school in the Life Skills and LRC classrooms.  We meet students once a month throughout the school year at Centre Wellington District Secondary School\, Elora Public School\, John Black Public School in Fergus\, Arthur Public School\, Victoria Cross Public School in Mount Forest\, and June Ave Public School in Guelph. \nLed by an ECFTA Arts Educator\, these sessions offer guided art instruction and contemporary art ideas to students in Centre and North Wellington. \n \nThe program is free to students.  Project themes are centered around community building and emphasize collaboration and success through personal artistic expression. The goal is connecting students to the community in meaningful and creative ways! \nWhy is this program important? \nStudents with developmental delays experience added challenges in feeling supported within the school system and the broader community. These children and youth also have limited access to arts-based resources within schools due to the continued erosion of arts funding. \nThis program strives to engage the emotional and social well-being of students through art making that connects them with community initiatives\, helping them experience community life beyond school. \nThis project arose in response to teachers of LRC and Life Skills students in our area and aligns with our goal of supporting community needs through the arts. Our goal is that students feel more connected and included in their community through the art-making process! \n\n  \nThe 2019 Vital Signs Report demonstrates the need for this program as follows: \n\nOnly 41% of students feel a sense of belonging to their community through school;\nAccessibility to the arts continues to be a barrier for many;\nYouth mental health is a particular vulnerability; and\nConnection to the community is listed as a preventative factor against suicide.\n\nFunding for this program is made possible thanks to the generosity of the Harry E. Foster Charitable Foundation the Johansen-Larsen Foundation and the Centre Wellington Community Foundation. Thank you! \n  \n\nProgram Insights \nEach year\, we discover that as the year progressed\, students gained an appreciation for each other’s work. The collective art making environment allows the students to locate their individuality within a larger group context in a very direct way by comparing how they resolved their works\, and how their classmates may have made different choices. \nThis form of communication and introspection is unique to collective art-making\, that allows for participants to see themselves in the context of others. DESCRIPTION:SUPPORTIVE ARTS is a unique program offering inclusive\, arts-based learning opportunities and compelling artistic experiences to individuals with varying abilities. We welcome all adults and caregivers from Wellington County and the surrounding areas to our weekly program\, led by ECFTA Arts Educator and Mindfulness Facilitators. \nWednesday & Thursday morning and afternoon classes held weekly September through June at the Art Centre. \n \nJoin us for a gently guided 2-hour workshop\, specifically designed to support adults of all abilities. Each session\, we will embrace diversity and friendship through explorations in art making\, movement\, mindfulness and music. On Thursdays\, we welcome a member of the Elora Singers into the gallery for a music and movement singalong. Join textile artist Caitlin Barrie this fall for 6 weeks of guided studio time and create your own approx. 20’x30′ accent rug. Whether you’re brand new or already obsessed with rug hooking\, you’ll receive hands-on support and the creative freedom to punch your own one-of-a-kind rug!  \nOnly 6 spaces available.  \nWednesday evenings\, Sept 24\, Oct 1\, Oct 8\, Oct 15\, Oct 22\, Oct 29 \n \nIn this course\, participants will create a hooked accent rug\, inspired by traditional and contemporary rug designs. Students will be shown how to create repeating pattern paper templates\, how to develop larger pieces on a rug hooking frame\, and all the techniques to create their own hand-punched rug from start to finish.   \n \nWeek 1: Start your journey by creating your design and selecting your color palette. Open Studio is designed as open-flow studio time\, loosely guided by artist Eileen MacArthur for artists who have some experience and would like specific guidance to develop or resolve their work. Classes will be collaborative and relaxed and offer both individual and group critiques\, as well as affording the students to opportunity to experiment with various methods and materials. \n \nEach week will start with a guided exercise for students to develop their critical thinking and studio practice. Week one students will start with some warm-up exercises\, make a material list and be asked to shop for their supplies for weeks 2-6. Join this guided two-part workshop where you’ll explore the beauty of pyrography on paper. Learn how to create consistent lines\, intricate patterns\, and beautiful shading using burning techniques—all in a relaxed\, creative environment. No prior experience needed!  \n \nDay 1: Exploring Paper & Techniques \nBegin your journey into paper pyrography by understanding the unique qualities of various papers including Fabriano\, Arches and more. You’ll learn to choose the right paper—such as sizing\, weight\, texture of paper—to ensure optimal results. Techniques like stippling\, hatching\, and gradient burning will be introduced to add depth and texture to your designs. Additionally\, you’ll discover how to incorporate colour using watercolour to enhance your artwork. \nDay 2: Creating Artwork \nOn the second day\, you’ll apply the skills acquired to create a detailed pyrography artwork on professional paper in an 8×10 format. Guidance will be provided in transferring your design onto the paper\, executing pyrography techniques\, and layering colour. DESCRIPTION:Step into the serene beauty of a winter night with Elora artist Rick Worthington in this immersive one-day oil workshop exploring the magic of light on a winter night. \nInspired by Rick’s painting Silent Illumination—a glowing portrayal of downtown Elora—this session invites you to explore the interplay of light\, colour\, and mood of festive lights and the stillness of a snowy winter street. \n \nThrough live demonstrations and hands-on practice\, you’ll learn: \n\nHow warm and cool tones can combine create luminous effects\nTechniques for suggesting glowing lights through expressive brushwork\nThe power of subtle value shifts to evoke stillness and mood\n\n Drawing from Impressionist techniques\, artists will experiment with: \n\nSimplifying complex scenes\nWorking with a limited palette\nApplying colour theory to build atmosphere and emotion\n\nWith Rick’s personalized guidance\, you’ll leave the workshop with a finished painting and a deeper understanding of how to bring light and life into your work. \n\nPlease note\, there is a $20 kit fee payable in cash to the instructor at the start of class. Kit fee includes oil paint\, a canvas\, odourless solvent\, reference image\, grey scale for colour mixing\, brushes etc.\nAll materials are provided in the kit fee. \n
