SUMMARY:Youth Outreach: The Power of Music & Creative Expression | Addiction & Recovery Program | A partnership with Portage
DESCRIPTION:Youth Addiction & Recovery Program: The Power of MUSIC & Creative Expression. \nTHE POWER OF ART & CREATIVE EXPRESSION continues to be an important outreach connection to our community. Through our partnership with Portage Elora\, this Youth Outreach Program is all about the POWER OF MUSIC! \nMUSIC JAM MONDAYS! is a pilot program this Fall and invites Portage youth in recovery to a welcoming environment to explore the basics of rhythm and melody with a variety of acoustic instruments. \n \nMusic can be a powerful way to express and connect with our emotions. MUSIC JAM MONDAYS! is designed to connect Portage youth with the potential of music making as a form of self expression. Through the learning of music fundamentals\, participants will develop a vocabulary to experiment\, collaborate and play off each other’s energy! \n \nEach week participants will be inspired by a curated playlist\, including different genres\, grooves and moods\, and will be encouraged to play both independently and collaboratively. Through weekly guided “jam” sessions\, led by music educator Jon Kraemer\, along with professional musicians from our community\, youth will be invited to explore and experiment with a choice of instruments\, acoustic guitar\, soprano ukulele\, hand drums\, and synthesizers. \nOur goal: \n\nExperience music making in a positive\, safe\, and supportive environment\nEngage with a variety of instruments\nDevelop confidence in their abilities to express themselves through music\nOffer an opportunity to see music as tool to be used throughout the many challenges of recovery and beyond Portage.\n\nThis program would not be possible without the tremendous support of our community! SUMMARY:Youth Outreach: Connecting to Community Through Art - for elementary and high school students with (dis)abilities
DESCRIPTION:This program provides  visual arts programming to youth with intellectual and/or developmental (dis)abilities in elementary and secondary school.  Students meet twice a month (once a month at Centre Wellington District High School and once a month at Elora Public School.  The sessions offer art instruction\, provided by an ECFTA Arts Educator\, assisted by classroom teachers. The program\, including instruction and art supplies are free to students.  Project themes are centred around community building\, emphasizing collaboration and success through personal artistic expression. The goal is connecting students to the community in meaningful and creative ways. \n \nWhy is this program important? \nStudents with (dis)abilities (termed “M.I.D” by the school board) experience intellectual and/or developmental delays and face added challenges to feeling supported within the school system and the broader community\, further exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. They also have limited access to arts-based resources within the school due to the continued erosion of arts funding. This program strives to engage them in focusing on emotional and social well-being through art projects that connect them with community initiatives\, helping them experience community life beyond school. Our goal is that they feel more connected and included in the community. \nThe 2019 Vital Signs Report demonstrates the need for this program as follows: \n\nOnly 41% of students feel a sense of belonging to their community through school;\nAccessibility to the arts continues to be a barrier for many;\nYouth mental health is a particular vulnerability; and\nConnection to the community is listed as a preventative factor against suicide.\n\nThis project arose as a direct request from teachers of M.I.D (mild intellectual disability) and Life Skills students and aligns with our goal of supporting community needs through the arts. \nAs additional funding and donations are secured for our Youth Outreach programs\, additional sessions will be added.  In the meantime\, we are grateful for the support from The Harry Foster Foundation who have enabled this program to run for the Fall/Winter 2022!  We couldn’t run this program without their support! \n  \n\nIn January 2021\,  we had to run this program virtually\, and we were able to offer this online instruction thanks in part to the support from the Ontario Trillium Foundation Community Building Fund.  This funding has been instrumental in supporting the Art Centre’s emergence from the pandemic\, deepen the curation of exhibitions\, and supporting virtual outreach programs for students with (dis)Abilities. \n  \n\n  \n  \n \n  \n  \n  \nFor more information about this program please contact us at:  programming@ecfta.ca \n  \nTo help support this program by donating today please click here.

SUMMARY:Supportive Arts Program | OTF Grant Boost
DESCRIPTION:New Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF) grant will boost our Supportive Arts program for adults 18+ with learning (dis)abilities \nWe are so thankful to the OTF who’s grant will help us grow this community program over the next 3 years!  Our goal with this program is the enrich the lives of our community participants through arts-based learning opportunities and compelling artistic experiences. \n \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nDue to COVID restrictions and the compromised immune systems of some of our participants\, they are not able to engage in road trips and come visit our facility at the Elora Centre for the Arts for phase one of this program.  The good news is\, if they can’t come to us (for now) – we will go to them!  We take our art instructors\, staff and art supplies ‘on the road’ to Guelph and run the program twice a week at the Live & Learn day-facility! \n \nCreativity – Self Discovery – Art & Mindfulness \nTwice a week\, an ECFTA Arts Instructor will lead a themed art project for the group\, followed by a body movement & mindfulness session that ties into the theme.   We look forward to sharing the photos from each week with our community so you can enjoy and appreciate the difference creativity can make in the lives of  participants. \nTo find out more\, and view photos of our program please click here!

SUMMARY:Youth & Addiction Recovery: The Healing Power of Art and Creative Expression
DESCRIPTION:CURRENTLY ON HOLD DUE TO COVID-19. In partnership with Portage Ontario Residential Drug Addiction Rehabilitation Centre for youth\, Elora Centre for the Arts (ECFTA) offers arts-based programming in our classroom  (includes 12 sessions).  Through individual and group-based art projects\, students will have the opportunity to learn art techniques and practice the creative freedom of accepting mistakes\, problem-solving and sharing using their projects as the catalyst.  The program will culminate in a public mural installation as well as work shown in a youth exhibition\, and will include student reflections of their artistic journey. \nThe first pilot session of this program has been partially funded by a generous grant from the Centre Wellington Community Foundation. \n \nAs outlined in the Centre Wellington 2019 Vital Signs report\, there is a need for better mental health care and addiction recover\, especially with the youth in our community.  In this dynamic partnership\, ECFTA and Portage will create projects that compliment a therapeutic community approach and allow for connections\, conversations and growth.  The artistic process provides an opportunity to make mistakes\, problem solve and come up with a Plan B.  It also helps focus on a task in a world of distraction\, and allows students to engage with their community in a meaningful way that helps them feel connected. \nYouth recovering from addiction have faced so many traumas in their lives\, which have been further compounded by the societal stigma that comes when someone is deemed an addict.  The result is a young person left feeling marginalized and isolated from their community.  This project will welcome Portage residents with open arms\, allowing them to develop and explore their creativity in a supported environment.  It will also open up the discussion of mental health on a broader community level among exhibition attendees. \nThe first pilot session of this program has been partially funded by a generous grant from the Centre Wellington Community Foundation.  To find out how you can help support this\, and future programs like this please click here. \n
