Create unique wearables that make a statement! Combine various techniques, textures, mediums and colours in new ways. Jen will show you how to pair hooking with other handwork – like beading, embroidery, needle felting, and appliqué – and create your own handmade accessories. She will walk you through the steps to complete at least one Small, but Mighty project – in time for you to wear it home! Take your rug hooking habit to a whole new level – or try rug hooking for the very first time!

Not a master rug hooker, nor professional seamstress? No worries! With a sense of adventure and a little patience, anyone can create distinctive bespoke hand-hooked accessories. Jen will bring along lots of samples and suggestions to inspire your designs, plus a variety of materials and tools. Make your piece as simple or as complicated as you like – the possibilities are truly endless! Learn various tried-and-true finishing methods and enjoy special one-on-one time with Jen.

All students are required to purchase a $25 kit, containing: One double-sided page summary of the “The Basics,” one prepared Ultrasuede(R) Plus frame ready to embellish by hand (no sewing machine required), plus findings to turn it into a pin or simple necklace, and a 3-pack of my “Needles You Need.” Students are also encouraged to purchase the “Jewellery 101 Gems & Jewels” eBooklet for complete detailed instructions and reference purposes.

Please Bring the following to your workshop:

Hooking supplies: Hook, scissors, small frame or hoop.
Scrap fabric: A piece of sturdy (not stretchy) scrap fabric large enough to fit inside your hoop or frame.
Scissors suitable for cutting cardboard.
Other Supplies: Bring your own, or buy from our stash. Some of these supplies may be purchased at the workshop, or in advance from www.fisheyesisters.ca : Felt Balls, interesting beads, and/or buttons (no more than 10-15), ranging in size from about 1/4” minimum to 3/4” maximum); Small squares of an exciting variety of colours and textures of wool fabric approx. 2” square (no more than about 20 of these to choose from); Pearl cotton or embroidery floss (just a handful of colours); Interesting materials for hooking, such as sari ribbon, chunky yarns, metallics, tulle, etc. (we do not use wool strips for making Jewellery). TIP: Try to limit the variety and quantity of materials for hooking. This will save time spent making choices. All of the supplies including materials for hooking should fit easily into a small shoebox.

Jen Manuell is an award-winning fourth generation rug hooker, first taught by her Aunt (the late Jean Armstrong). Jen started hooking in 1999 and has taught for more than a decade. Jen has travelled all over Canada, the United States, and England, sharing her fresh and distinctive ideas under her Fish Eye Rugs banner. Jen recently taught two classes at the Textile Museum of Canada.

Jen is largely self-taught and an enthusiastic experimenter, with a passion for coming up with new twists on traditional techniques. Her work has been included in many exhibits over the years, in both Canada and various states south of the border. In 2012, she received the prestigious Ontario Hooking Craft Guild (OHCG) Best in Show Rowan Award for her piece entitled Jumbo, a particularly impressive room-sized rug she designed and hooked. Jen’s work has been featured in several publications, and most recently in Simply Modern, by Deanne Fitzpatrick.

In early 2016, Jen left her professional career behind and is finally started pursuing her dream of making a living making things. She is the owner, operator, artistic force and maker behind Fish Eye Sisters, creating a line of unique home goods featuring her hand-dyed woollen fabrics.
