New Materials, New Techniques and the Hand Hooked Surface is a workshop created to allow participants to fully engage in exploration, experimentation, and the creative process of surface design which is often applied in layers combining techniques and materials to create detail, depth, and interest. This two-day intensive workshop is ideally suited for students wishing to push beyond their current practice and into an exploratory framework. Students will develop a deeper understanding for the integration of new materials and techniques with the hand hooked surface. You will have the opportunity to explore your ideas using metal, found objects, hand embroidery, needle felting, beading, collage, machine stitch, and printing.

Instructor Bio:
Michelle Sirois-Silver’s innovative approach to her hand hooking workshops creates a framework where students explore the potential for this unique craft. She is known as a hands-on instructor giving each student one-on-one attention. With almost twenty years of experience, Michelle has taught at the Maiwa School of Textiles and the Metchosin International Summer School for the Arts. Her influences include: Gloria Crouse and her innovative use of nontraditional materials and techniques; the narrative inspired hand hooked work of mixed media artist Nancy Edell; and her first rug hooking teacher Barb Kennedy, who told her to hook what she loves.
