This course is suitable for beginners or anyone wanting to refresh their knowledge. Gothic Blackletter is a formal, technical hand that requires patience and practice. This is a good hand to begin with as it doesn’t require pressure and release techniques or pen manipulation. You will become acquainted with the basic tools as well as the letterforms. This course includes instruction, demonstrations and fun calligraphic projects with discussion around tools and best practices.
SUPPLY LIST
For those new to calligraphy, the Pilot Parallel Pen 3.8mm (green cap) is preferable. Pens can be purchased directly from the instructor for $20. Alternately, if you have some experience, you can use a dip pen with a Speedball C2 nib.
Worksheets, paper, handouts and projects will be supplied for the first class and we will be discussing different paper options.
Please bring a ruler and a mechanical pencil to class
INSTRUCTOR BIO
Wendy Hardy is a Guelph based calligrapher whose love of lettering began in a high school art class. Having a BA in Literature from the University of Guelph, lettering was a natural progression as an artistic expression of Wendy’s love of words. Since 1983, she has continued her calligraphic journey with local and international workshops and instructors. She has been involved in the Royal City Calligraphy Guild for 16 years, 5 of those as president. For several years, she owned and operated Eden Place Village Glass and Gift in Eden Mills, specializing in stained glass. Through her current business, My Personal Scribe, she takes commissions for certificates, poems, quotes and mailings that long for a personal touch. She is excited to help others discover the love of lettering.
