Tis the witching season! Get your witch on! Practical Magick is back!

This year, Practical Magick will take a closer look at establishing a practice space, setting intentions and journaling. If you’ve been curious about earth-based spirituality, here’s an opportunity to learn more through a series of guided workshops and crafting designed to enhance your practice.

Witches exist in most cultures and have existed throughout time. They have been revered, tolerated and/or reviled. In recent years, in the Western world, the term Witch has been reclaimed to describe people who use witchcraft as a spiritual practice. Witchcraft celebrates the natural cycles of the earth and celestial bodies and works to enhance positive action, both personally and communally. Witches usually embrace feminism, environmentalism, herbalism, multiculturalism, and social justice, and incorporate these concepts in their practice.

Botany at its most fascinating!  Learn about the history and uses of the baneful herbs and plants closely associated with witchcraft and used since antiquity for purposes both medicinal and magical. Belladonna, clary sage, datura, foxgloves, hellebores, mandrake, monkshood, mugwort, poppies, rue, tansies, vervain, wormwood, and more will be explored. This seminar is entertaining and informative, but definitely not a “how-to” as these plants can be deadly.

Shelley Carter is the coordinator of the Elora Tarot, the Elora Tarot and Divination Festival and a fierce gardener.

Professor Jonathan Schmidt has taught about the chemical ecology and ethnobotany of plants for over 25 years at the University of Guelph and tends a very peculiar garden.
