Not just for hipsters, this bus trip will offer anyone, one, sleepless night of high-art adventure… experience the city transformed by more than 550 artists for Toronto’s fourth annual sunset to sunrise celebration of contemporary art. Discover art in galleries, museums and unexpected places. From churches and grocery stores to chimney stacks and bus stations, choose from more than 132 installations and chart your own path. Bring / buy your own food & drink.

WORDFEST V

A magical evening for poets, writers and storytellers. Candles and hot apple cider set the mood for an evening of performance and appreciation of the power of the word. Contact the Elora Centre for the Arts to be included in the open-mic segment.

LIFE STUDIO

Artists with figure drawing experience will enjoy a self directed session with a live model. Models differ week to week with some gestures and extended poses. Bring your own medium & supplies. Great for students preparing a portfolio. *No instructor.
 
LIFE DRAWING DROP-IN

1pm to 3pm. $10 Members Only
Members in good standing are invited to drop in to the Centre for a weekly Life Drawing Open Studio. Professional models are in attendance each week.
 
MARATHON LIFE DRAW / PAINT
Saturday, Nov.21, 9am to 6pm
$100 M & NM *Lunch included
 
An athletic approach to studying the live model. Perfect for beginners and experienced artists. You will start off the morning and afternoon with a short warm-up of quick gestures moving into a 3 hour session with your choice of model. An instructor will be ready to guide beginners, morning and afternoon. A continental breakfast and a catered lunch will be served. Bring your own supplies. There is a limited supply of easels, so bring your own if possible. Group and one-on-one critiques will take place, as well as, an evening social between 5pm to 6pm. Pre-register to secure your spot!
 
HOW TO DRAW
Tuesdays, Sept. 22 to Oct. 27

Within the comfort of a relaxed and meditative environment you will learn how to transfer what you see, on to paper, with techniques in measuring and observation. Starting with cones and cubes, you will learn the elements of drawing through demos and exercises and a step-by-step approach. You will use charcoal, graphite and conte crayon to draw a range of subject matter: still life, interior space, and portrait.

POTTERY WHEEL & CLAY BASICS

There is no experience necessary to learn how to throw on the potter’s wheel or to hand build sculptures. If you have always wanted to make your own pots, bowls, platters and vessels then sign up today! Great for gifts or for your own use. You will see demonstrations and try your hand at, coiling, pinching, carving, and slab building, and explore the creation of 3-D objects by wedging, centring and lifting on the wheel. All pieces will be fired. For an additional fee you have the opportunity of glazing your creations after the first firing, approximately 2 weeks later. Please bring a lunch. *Clay & firing included. LANDSCAPE PAINTING INT/ADV
Tuesdays, Sept. 22 to Nov.3

Tailored for students who are comfortable with painting and want to develop their work technically and thematically. Concentrating on developing unique pieces that evoke mood, feeling, and ideas while integrating source materials; photographs, art history and sketchbook strategies. Several studies on canvas will be completed over the duration. *Supplies required.

Beginner Oil or Acrylic Painting
Wednesdays, Sept. 23 to Nov.4,
6:30 pm to 9 pm

An introduction to oil and acrylic painting techniques; students will concentrate on developing their perceptual skills through a series of exercises, which gradually increase in range and complexity. The class will have the opportunity to work from a variety of photo images and still life objects. Topics covered include the fundamentals of colour theory, light and shadow, composition, visual perspective, paint handling and application. *Supplies Required Instructor: Phil Irish, BA
INT/ADV PAINTING STUDIO
Thursdays, Sept. 24 to Nov. 5
7:00 pm to 10:00 pm

This class has a component of in-class instruction with an emphasis on independent work. Exercises will include advanced colour theory, paint handling and application such as glazes and impasto, form and composition. Students will work from a photograph, object or still life of their choice. Please bring your photo or objects to the first class if possible. Please bring in any unfinished paintings that you wish to resolve. *Supplies Required

Composition, the Natural Way with Gordon MacKenzie

Learn from a master and give your painting process new life!

Painters with some watercolour experience will explore the more traditional methods of composing a painting. We will focus primarily on alternative, natural or instinctive approaches. The watercolour techniques used will vary and reflect the approach taken. The intent is to achieve these skills and techniques that will offer a variety of methods to compose your work.. Please bring two or three “haven’t got a chance” paintings for critique. Not suitable for beginners. 16 person maximum.

 

Gordon MacKenzie is the author of the popular painting instruction book “Watercolorists Essential Notebook” published by North Light Books of Cincinnati.  He resides in Sault Ste. Marie where he has retired after 33 years as a teacher and Art Specialist / Consultant for the public Board of Education.  Gordon has mounted 25 one-man shows in Canada and the U.S.A and his work hangs in many private and corporate collections throughout Canada, U.S.A., Europe, Africa and the Far East.  He has found honours in several American shows, including that of the Detroit Institute of Art and the American Artist annual competition.  He has been a successful participant in 18 Buc. khorn Wildlife Art Festivals and his work has been on the cover of Reader’s Digest in Canada, Kuwait, Finland, Australia and the U.S.A.

BASIC PHOTOGRAPHY

This course will help you solve the challenges of working with a technical medium, while stimulating your creative side .We will discuss the principles of photography and cover topics such as types of cameras, camera settings, lenses, ISO, determining exposures & apertures, using filters & accessories, working with composition & lighting, and more. Each week you will receive a practice assignment, which will be (gently) critiqued the following week. Bring your camera to each class. Suitable for both film & digital photographers.

FALL LANDSCAPE PHOTOS
Thursday, October  1. 7 pm to 9:30 pm

This workshop will take you through the basics of creating stunning landscapes that reflect the fall season. Through a discussion & slide presentation with many local scenes, you will learn about equipment such as lenses, filters, tripods, and accessories that are best suited for landscape photography. We’ll cover choosing locations, dealing with inclement weather, composition, lighting, creative effects, and explore working in both colour and black & white. Suitable for both film or digital photographers of all skill levels.
 

SPORTS & ACTION PHOTOS
Wednesday, Oct 14 7 pm to 9:30 pm

Do your kids always look blurry when you photograph their hockey games? Are you wondering how to catch high speed sports like skiing or skating? Then, learn how to shoot sports, like hockey, figure skating, skiing, biking, and horse sports like jumping and barrel racing, or action photos of kids or animals. If you like moving subjects don’t miss this course. Mostly suitable for SLR photography, film or digital.

FROM CAMERA TO COMPUTER
Monday, Nov. 2 7 pm to 9:30 pm

You’ve filled your memory card with great photos but now what? Learn how to upload your photos to your computer, organize files, and create backup copies and more. You will learn some basic photo editing skills and how to resize your images for e-mail or print. This course does not require a computer in class. This course is valuable for artists who create digital files for gallery submissions.

BLACK & WHITE PHOTOS
Thursday, Nov. 26 7 pm to 9:30 pm

Explore a world without colour and train your eye and your lenses, to see shapes and textures, patterns of light and shades of grey. We’ll discuss photo editing for black & white, and converting your colour files. We will also set up a simple studio and photograph objects in black & white. Bring your camera, and your creativity. Suitable for both SLR & point & shoot photographers, film or digital.


TRAVEL PHOTOS
Wednesday, Dec 2 7 pm to 9:30 pm

Topics for this workshop include planning for a successful photo trip, choosing equipment and transporting your camera. We will discuss composition, lighting, and explore imaginative ways to photograph specific subjects including festivals, architecture, people, cityscapes, landscapes, or night scenes. We’ll consider the elements of photographing different cultures & people. Suitable for both film and digital photographers.


WINTER NIGHT LIGHTS
Friday, Dec 11, 6:30 pm to 9:30 pm
$50 M / $60 NM

In this outdoor field trip you will discover that there is a whole new world after dark and it is full of opportunities for the photographer. The Christmas season with its brilliance and sparkle provides a wonderful chance to create images that incorporate light and shadow, surreal snow scenes, and special effects with moving light. Learn how to use long exposures, create unusual compositions, and more! *Supplies Needed. Dress for the weather.

Courses that are cancelled by the ECFTA will be refunded in full.
